VTP - VLAN Trunking Protocol

VTP is a Cisco proprietary protocol. Which helps administrator for managing large network. VTP will advertise VLAN configurations across the common administrative domain.

VTP will minimizes the administrators job, changes on one switch to be propagated to other switches via VTP.

Switches transmit VTP messages only on 802.1Q and ISL trunks.

VTP has three modes server, client & transparent.

VTP Server
This is the default VTP mode
VLANs can be created, modified, and deleted
VTP Client
This behaves like a VTP server without the ability to create, change, or delete VLANs
VTP Transparent
Switches in the VTP Transparent mode do not participate in VTP but it will forward VTP updates and traffic

VTP Revision number should be higher in VTP Server Switch
